Lee Johnson makes paintings as an emotional response to external stimuli - he is not an inventor of ideas but a reactor to things around him. Painting for Lee is about the thinking and reactive nature of seeing and listening to things. It’s about feeling, and ultimately about living one’s life, scrabbling together some poetic responses to try and understand - not depict - a life lived.
“Paddle Boarding at Sunset came from a sketch while walking along the banks of the river Stour in ‘Constable Country’, Suffolk, where a number of John Constable’s paintings are set. My dad, who is suffering from dementia lives near the village where Constable was born and lived his life. I walk the river that he walked as a way to clear my head after a difficult day caring for my father. I draw the river, the paddle boarders, the trees - things that are very much alive while my father - like the sunset - is slowly fading away.”
